Keir Starmer has said the United Kingdom should strengthen its partnership with the European Union, citing growing global instability driven by the Iran war.

Speaking at a press conference, Starmer argued that closer cooperation on both security and the economy was essential, warning that the current crisis could "define us for a generation" and have impacts similar to the energy shocks of the 1970s.

"We want to be more ambitious," he said, calling for deeper alignment based on "shared values" and "shared interests".

His remarks come as tensions rise with Donald Trump, who has criticised European allies (including the UK) for refusing to support US military operations against Iran.

The dispute has further strained transatlantic relations, with Trump saying today in a new interview with The Daily Telegraph that the US is strongly considering a NATO exit.

Starmer also pointed to the long-term economic effects of Brexit, describing the 2020 deal as having caused "deep damage" to the UK economy.
