An iconic off-road name is making a comeback, but without its brand name. The Freelander is being revived by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chery, this time as a standalone brand focused on electrified SUVs rather than a traditional Land Rover model.
Instead of sitting under the Land Rover umbrella, the new Freelander will operate as its own sub-brand. It's part of a broader strategy to target the fast-growing EV market, especially in China, while still leaving room for global expansion later on.
This first preview (through Top Gear) comes in the form of a concept called Concept 97, which hints at a rugged SUV with classic boxy proportions inspired by the original model. While the show car features futuristic touches, its overall design language is expected to carry over largely unchanged into production.
And it's not just one car. The plan is ambitious: up to six new models over the next five years, with rapid rollout cycles to keep pace with China's ultra-competitive EV market. Production will take place in China, with the first model expected to launch there soon. However, both companies have already hinted at international expansion, including potential sales in Europe depending on demand.
