Project Amethyst, which we have previously reported on, involves an in-depth collaboration between AMD and Sony, with the PlayStation 5 Pro currently using a console-exclusive AI-based technology called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution).

The technology is essentially based on AMD's FSR, which is comparable to and competes with Nvidia's equivalent DLSS. The aim is to optimize and offer higher resolutions, better anti-aliasing, more ray tracing, and more stable image updates - without requiring new components. The PC market generally requires advanced graphics cards, where the technology has repeatedly demonstrated how powerful it can be in terms of performance gains.

The best-before date on Sony's more expensive game console will soon be extended through a system update, specifically in March, when Sony and AMD are ready to release their updated algorithm based on AMD FSR 4.0, giving the more expensive Pro console a more defined feather in its cap. All games optimized for PS5 Pro will eventually benefit from this, but the newly released Resident Evil Requiem will be the first game to run the technology live. You can see what this looks like in practice in the comparison below.
