Abylight, the Barcelona-based studio and publisher responsible for both its own titles (such as the recent Citadelum and the earlier One Military Camp) and adaptations of others (Hyper Light Drifter and SOMA), officially announced this morning the opening of a new subsidiary in the Argentine capital.
Named Abylight Buenos Aires and "an organisation similar to the parent studio Abylight Barcelona", this new branch is dedicated to developing for "emerging platforms'", and therefore the team will lean more towards innovation than towards more traditional and established systems. Débora Sofía Theaux Leutgeb, head of The Global Game Jam in the region, has been put in charge.
The most notable mention of the announcement, however, is that the first games from Abylight Buenos Aires will be released this spring (i.e., in the next three months), as a publisher rather than as its own creations, we understand. The specific titles are unknown at this time.
The move is clearly strategic, given the growth of studios and talent in the LATAM region and how their projects are reaching further and further afield. Studios such as Etermax and titles such as Arranger, Despelote, Two Strikes, and the upcoming Wind Runners and Sky Dust are good examples of this. The announcement coincidentally comes on the same day that alleged news has been leaked about The Wolf Among Us 2, which has reportedly been restarted in Argentina, but a priori the two stories are not connected.
On a related note, the day after tomorrow, on March 5, Citadelum will release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
