Former US president Joe Biden has warned that his successor, Donald Trump, will attempt to "steal" the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking in South Carolina during a ceremony honoring his lifetime in politics, Biden said Trump was erecting barriers to voting because he "knows he can't win your vote".

Biden described the current political climate as "dark days" for the country and revived a phrase from his 2020 campaign, calling the moment another chapter in the "battle for the soul of this nation". He urged Americans to "show up and vote", arguing that turnout remains the strongest safeguard of democratic power.

The speech marked one of Biden's rare public appearances since leaving office. He also criticized Trump's recent State of the Union address and immigration policies, while pointing to polling that shows the president's approval ratings at historic lows.
