The son of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner has been jailed on suspicion of murdering his parents after the couple were found dead in their Los Angeles home, police said on Monday.

Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Sunday night and booked on murder charges. Authorities said he is being held without bail while homicide detectives prepare to present the case to the Los Angeles County district attorney to determine whether formal charges will be filed.

Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were discovered slain at their Brentwood residence on Sunday afternoon. Police said their investigation determined the deaths were homicides and that their son was responsible.

Substance abuse and periods of homelessness

Nick Reiner has spoken publicly in the past about long struggles with substance abuse and periods of homelessness. Local media reported he was seen arguing with his parents the night before their deaths at a holiday gathering, though police have not confirmed those accounts.
