The Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft has revealed revenues of $4.24 billion dollars for the last three months of 2011, a 15% increase on the previous years figures and a record for that quarter.

The company claims to have sold 8.2 million Xbox consoles in the last quarter. Microsoft's Kevin Turner said to investors: "This holiday season was the strongest in Microsoft history, thanks to good sales execution and compelling products like Xbox 360 and Kinect."

Total sales for the Xbox 360 now stand at over 66 million, with sales for Kinect standing at a rather impressive 18 million units. That represents great business for a console nearing the end of its life cycle.

GamesIndustry.biz reported that Microsoft also saw a 5% year-on-year increase across all divisions, making 2011 particularly satisfying for CEO Steve Ballmer. He said: "We delivered solid financial results, even as we prepare for a launch year that will accelerate many of our key products and services."

He later added: "Coming out of the Consumer Electronics Show, we're seeing very positive reviews for our new phones and PCs, and a strong response to our new Metro style design that will unify consumer experiences across our phones, PCs, tablets, and television in 2012."
