After Sony quickly denied rumours that they were planning on showing off the next PlayStation at E3 this year, a spokesperson on behalf of cloud gaming service Gaikai has suggested that one of the current platform holders may bow out of the next generational cycle.
Speaking at CES, Nanea Reeves from Gaikai said: ""Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3."
With Nintendo reportedly set to announce release dates for the Wii U at E3, it leaves Microsoft and Sony holding their cards close to their chests.
Microsoft was expected to demonstrate some kind of technology; could it be a cloud gaming Xbox system? Given the American companies strength in the online area, it is not out of the realms of possibility.
Sony are still trying to maximise sales of the PS3 and seem intent on making sure that the console proves a resounding success. Talk of a new console would certainly marginalise the PS3, which could explain why they wont be trying to keep pace with Microsoft at this years E3.
The prediction from Gaikai, as reported in Industry Gamers, may just be hopeful talk from a cloud gaming service provider; after all, it's in their interests that console developers start thinking about cloud gaming as a viable option for the future. So until we hear one of the major platform holders come out with plans for a cloud gaming console, we'll have to call this what it is; speculation.
