The UKIE charts for 2011 are in, and it's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 that stands as the best-selling video game of last year.
That's not really a surprise, but it is impressive nevertheless. That's three chart-topping years in a row for the series in the UK, with Modern Warfare 2 ruling the roost in 2009 and Black Ops taking top spot in 2010.
For a moment, let us reflect on some of the stats:
- Modern Warfare 3 grossed a record-breaking £83 million in its first week of sale.
- Due to the launch of MW3, the week of its release was the biggest grossing week of all time for video games software at £121 million.
- Further afield, worldwide sales of the game came to almost £550 million.
- MW3 grossed $1 billion dollars worldwide in just 16 days, beating James Cameron's Avatar by a day.
EA had a good year in the all format chart, taking second and third (with FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3 respectively). Zumba Fitness came in fourth, holding back a late charge from our Game of the Year; The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Zumba Fitness topped the Nintendo Wii chart, whilst the best selling DS title was Professor Layton And The Spectre's Call. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 sold best for the 3DS.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare topped both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 charts. FIFA 12 came second in both and also proved popular on PSP.
Football Manager dominated the PC charts this year, finishing first and second.
