Earlier this week, we reported that Saudi Arabia had planned to invest a whopping $38 billion to invest in a gaming hub. Now, it seems we're seeing the first steps of that plan as Savvy Games Group, a company backed by the incredibly wealthy Saudi Public Investment Fund, has acquired the mobile games developer Scopely.
Alongside Marvel Strike Force, Scopely has also developed some well-received mobile games such as WWE Champions, Scrabble Go, The Walking Dead: Road to Survival, Star Trek Fleet Command and many more.
This could explain why the mobile games developer was valued at $4.9 billion, but as we know from the Xbox and Activision Blizzard acquisition, gaming deals can be much more expensive. It's said that Scopley will remain an autonomous developer after the acquisition, and Brian Ward, the CEO of Savvy Games Group, said of the acquisition: "Scopely is one of the fastest-growing games companies today, and we have long admired their ability to build loyal, engaged player communities ... Scopely has proven to be an exceptional leader and will continue to revolutionize the future of games for years to come."
