The creator of the legendary Shenmue series has recently spoken out about his desire to continue his work and make Shenmue III.

Devoted fans of the first two games have longed for a return to the series, but due to excessive development costs and limited financial returns, SEGA has not been keen to revisit their critically acclaimed franchise.

Speaking on a fan forum, Yu Suzuki was guarded about the true likelihood of another Shenmue game, but he did have plenty to say about possible story lines. The translation of the fan forum interview by website Spong reads: "This is the person who has trained with Iwao [Hazuki] in the olden days in China. Then, in the story that will take place after Shenmue II, he will become a "key" character!"

What gives this potential character real substance is the fact the Yu Suzuki stated: "Shenmue's license is an IP that belongs to SEGA.... We can obtain the license from SEGA."

If he can obtain the license from SEGA then a new Shenmue game seems likely, especially given the level of enthusiasm Yu Suzuki clearly has for the project. Let's just hope that an agreement can be reached, because there are many fans who would jump at the chance to revisit the series.
