As expected Sony unveiled their virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4 during a session at GDC last night. Project Morpheus was only shown as a prototype that visitors to GDC will be able to test with tech demos in the Sony booth. Crytek, Epic and Unity have all confirmed that their engines will support the new VR device.

Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios, was on hand to announce the device: "Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation®Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation."

Sony stressed ease of use as importance and noted that several first-party studios were working on VR projects and that they were hoping that third-parties would support it as well.

Sony also talked about other areas of use such as being able to virtually tour hotel rooms before booking them. No actual games were announced for Project Morpheus, and no price point was mentioned. Perhaps, we'll get to know more at E3.
