John Carmack has revealed the reason behind his recent departure from the company he co-founded, citing id Software's reluctance to support virtual reality as the reason he left for a new challenge.

In an interview with USA Today, Carmack explained why he jumped ship from the Doom creator in order to join Oculus, the fledgling company behind the Oculus Rift VR headset.

"I would have been content probably staying there working with the people and technology that I know and the work we were doing," he revealed, before explaining that because his old employers weren't keen on bringing virtual reality to their games, he knew he had to move on.

"They couldn't come together on that which made me really sad. It was just unfortunate. When it became clear that I wasn't going to have the opportunity to do any work on VR while at id software, I decided to not renew my contract."

In August it was confirmed that Carmack was working for both companies, and he continued to work in two different roles before finally leaving his post in November of last year.
