Adhesive Games' free-to-play mech blaster Hawken is making the transition to Steam this week, a move that'll bring the multiplayer shooter to a much wider audience ahead of its full release.

Existing players can no longer use the original launcher to play the game and will now have to access it through Steam (read the Steam Transition Guide for more details). The transition will take place over the next seven days, and players who make the leap over in this first week will be able to play the beta version of the latest update as they prepare to open their digital gates to the Steam community.

A blog post explained the move: "Steam is the premier platform for PC gaming reaching millions of gamers worldwide and will allow us to introduce Hawken to a brand new audience. As we continue to focus on a full release in 2014, expanding our reach is a major priority for us. Today, we're bringing Live services down to begin our transition to Steam. This is quite a major shift for us, so the process will not be instantaneous."
