Microsoft has confirmed a strong end of 2013, with the launch of Xbox One helping the company finish the second fiscal quarter with a flourish.

In the three months leading up December 31 the platform holder shifted more than 7 million consoles, with 3.5 million of those sold being the new Xbox One. They managed to sell 3.9 million Xbox 360s in the same period and Surface sales doubled.

Overall MS posted record revenue of $24.52 billion for the period, equating to net income of $6.56 billion for Q2.

"Our Devices and Consumer segment had a great holiday quarter... The investments we are making in devices and services that deliver high-value experiences to our customers, and the work we are doing with our partners, are driving strong results and positioning us well for long-term growth," said CEO Steve Ballmer.
