King scores Candy trademark

Apple is now enforcing this on AppStore.

It seems you can trademark almost anything, even something as generic as the word "candy". Social game giants King have successfully laid claim a trademark on Candy in connection with video games and clothes (!) in the United States. A claim was filed last year (Feb 6) and apparently it was granted on January 15. Apple has started sending out e-mails to developers whose games include the word Candy on AppStore to enforce the ruling. Apparently there is still time for someone to challenge the trademark.

Candy Crush Saga reportedly grosses around $3.5 million per day (!) and is a massive cash cow for King. And while AppStore certainly could do with some cleaning up of obvious clone titles (this one comes to mind), a word like candy is difficult to claim as a trademark and perhaps even more difficult to protect and maintain. We suspect the King legal department will grow as a result.
