CCP Games has announced today that with the help of Eve Online players, they've managed to raise $190,890 and have donated it to the Icelandic Red Cross in order to help the citizens of the Philippines as they recover from Typhoon Haiyan.
The funds were raised through the ‘PLEX for GOOD' program, whereby players donated their in-game items to the worthy cause. For every PLEX donated (each represents one month of game time), CCP donated $15 USD to their charity. In total players offered up 1060 years of play time.
These funds were supplemented by those earned during an eight hour live-stream event, where developers boxed each other, heads were shaved, tattoos were inked and people got shot by paintball guns. All in the name of charity.
"We often talk about how EVE is ‘real', a simulation of humanity where there are few rules and all the economic, political and social forces of human nature push the boundaries of morality in all directions," said Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CEO of CCP.
"We've seen the passionate side of our players over the past decade, but truly nothing could prepare us for this level of generosity from them. It is humbling. It is beautiful. It is what EVE is really about."
