Pachter: Sony are "fools" to skip E3 2019

The analyst offers his views on the motivations, how last year affected the decision, and whether we'll see a PS5 announcement this year.

It took a lot of people by surprise when Sony revealed that they won't participate in E3 this year. After all, it's an event that usually gets attention even from those who aren't really into video game media, and Sony even made it clear that they won't run any parallel event at the same time as E3 either (something EA usually does), although they have clarified that they still have things to announce during 2019.

When analyst Michael Pachter from Wedbush Securities - likely the most famous in the world of gaming - was asked what he thinks of Sony's decision, he revealed he considers it a one-off and says they are "fools" to miss out on E3:

"I think it's a one-off. I think they made a bad decision. I think they somehow internally determined that the money's not well spent- and they're wrong. I don't know what they spend on E3, but even if it's $15 million, they get $15 million of publicity out of it. So I think they're fools to bypass the show. And they'll be back."

Pachter also claims that all the criticism towards Sony's weaker than usual E3 press conference last year is one of the reasons they are sitting this year out:

"They had that stupid walk-through that nobody understood, and it just wasn't fun. And I think they probably spent a ton on that. And they're very much guys who don't acknowledge that they did anything wrong, so they just take their ball and go home, because it didn't work well."

Finally, Pachter also has a few comments regarding PlayStation Experience, which was canceled last year as well. He thinks PlayStation 5 will be announced late this year or early 2020 too, and that might happen at a PlayStation Experience event:

"I think it's all related to gearing up for the next generation console. They'll probably announce the next-gen console in Spring of 2020, and have their own event- maybe they'll call it PSX. Maybe there's a PSX in December of 2019, and they announce their next-gen console then."

Will you miss Sony at E3?
