Blizzard has put a bullet in the back of the head of the Overwatch League, but with that premier esports league dead in the water, what does the future hold for competition in the esport? This is precisely the question Blizzard has announced by revealing the new Overwatch esports ecosystem.

Set to be a multi-tiered, multi-region system, this will feature a premier scene where the best of the best compete. Known as the Champions Series, this will span Europe, North America, Middle East, North Africa, and Asia and will be comprised of several competitive stages where teams will fight for slots in international and in-person events, the first being at DreamHack in Dallas in May and the second being at DreamHack Stockholm in November - marking a return for premier live competitive Overwatch action outside of the US.

To add to this and the Overwatch World Cup, Blizzard is looking to host the WDG Cup across Asia (hosted by WDG Esports), as well as the WDG Scholastic Tournament to bring students into the competitive action.

Likewise, Blizzard is teaming up with Faceit and Wara.gg to help grow grassroots competition around the world. These platforms will also serve as the location to find information on schedules, tournaments, and other information down the line.

We're told that the Champions Series qualifiers will kick off in EU and NA in March, shortly after the Calling All Heroes tournament wraps up in late February. OWCS action in Asia will start a little earlier in late February. It's unclear which teams will be competing in this revamped competitive programme, but no doubt the still existing Overwatch League teams will be part of the fray.
