Ever since Overwatch 2 was first revealed at BlizzCon earlier this month, many questions have been raised about where the first game and its playerbase fit into Blizzard's plans, and it turns out that the clients will actually merge at one point, as director Jeff Kaplan told Kotaku.
"There will be a point where the clients merge," said Kaplan. "We think this is important, especially as a competitive experience. The whole idea is to avoid fragmenting the player base and giving anybody a competitive advantage. If we're playing in the same competitive pool, you'd better not have a better framerate just because you're on a different version of the engine."
"I think Overwatch 2 is kinda gonna be the greatest moment in Overwatch history," he added later on, and when we talked to Blizzard at the California event ourselves, we also got the message that Overwatch 1 and 2 players will play "side by side".
Are you pleased with Blizzard's approach?
