No, Tetris Effect doesn't require SteamVR on PC

It's still an option, but there are other methods for playing the puzzler in VR on the Epic Games Store version.

Tetris Effect released last year as a triumphant return for the legendary puzzle game (check out our review here), but after half a year on PS4 the game is now available on PC via the Epic Games Store. When this released reports emerged of the game needing SteamVR to work when playing the game in VR, but it turns out that's not necessarily the case.

Enhance has talked to Eurogamer about these reports, clarifying that it doesn't require SteamVR, since it can be played using Oculus Rift's Oculus SDK (software development kit).

Enhance has even taken to Twitter to clarify further:

"1. To play in (optional) VR, you can launch via SteamVR (not Steam) for Vive (& some other HMDs that work w OpenVR API), -OR- Oculus VR for those HMD"

"2. Tetris Effect is VR optional, you can play in 2D w no res or framerate limit!"

It's easy to see where the confusion originally came from though, as a statement from Epic Games to DSOGaming had said that "Tetris Effect itself does not require steam to run. However, Tetris Effect VR does require require SteamVR, both on HTC Vive and Oculus".

Have you tried it out on PC?
