One of Nintendo's innovations has been the d-pad, which is still used in controllers today, but according to a report by Kotaku, to get there Nintendo had to do some failed prototypes as well.

During the 1980s, for instance, Nintendo's legendary designer Gunpei Yokoi was aiming to add an arcade-style joystick to Game & Watch's foldable and compact handheld devices. In the end this prototype joystick looked a lot like a nipple, and because of this the whole thing got the nickname of "oppai gata kontoroora", meaning boob-shaped controller.

No images have survived of this prototype, or at least they've not been released for the public, which may well be for the best. Surprisingly, though, the design was shelved because it wasn't working as intended, not because of its appearance.

Which is Nintendo's best innovation?
