Yesterday we saw reports that Nintendo would discontinue the production of Wii U, via reputable Japanese site, Nikkei, something Nintendo has now denied. The website stated that Nintendo was preparing to stop production of the Wii U closer to the end of the year, due to "lack of popularity of the console" and the supposed conviction that Nintendo could not reverse Wii U's current stalemate. Nikkei went on to say several companies responsible for producing components for the console, had already stopped production. Despite the hardware discontinuation, Nikkei also stated that production of Wii U games would continue.

Nintendo as since responded to Nikkei's claims, through a representative who spoke with another japonese site, IT Media: "This isn't an announcement from our company. From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production [of the Wii U] is scheduled to continue."

Not the most convincing response we've seen, but at least it does not confirm the report. With the NX looming it remains to be seen for how long Nintendo continues to produce new Wii U units.
