Nintendo have confirmed that Wii U will not make an appearance at Gamescom in Cologne. The reason stated is "security concerns", a reason that sounds vague at best. Hiring security for the public event, would be one way to tackle it, keeping Wii U behind closed doors would be another.

Conceivably Tech speculates that the reason may be that Nintendo are considering a redesign of Wii U, as Nintendo can ill afford the same lukewarm reception for Wii U that the Nintendo 3DS got as it entered the market earlier this year.

Historically, Nintendo have not shown a tremendous interest in Europe's biggest gaming event, so perhaps it's just their typical tendency to refrain from showing new stuff at Gamescom that is once again in play.
