Whilst we were at the 2019 Game Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco last week, we caught up with Brjann Sigurgeirsson from Image & Form to talk about the next game in the SteamWorld series, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech, an RPG that's just had its release date revealed.
During the interview, Sigurgeirsson gave a brief explanation about the game. "SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech, is the next game in the SteamWorld series and as usual, it is completely different to anything we've ever done," he explained. It's not surprising this is the case, as the SteamWorld series has taken the form of a shooter, tower defence game, and an action-platformer over the years. This next installment is no different.
"It's an epic JRPG and in the battling moments there are card battling mechanics," Sigurgeirsson continued when talking about what makes SteamWorld Quest so much different from the rest. Not only is the genre of this game unique, but the way it plays also reflects this.
Likewise, SteamWorld Quest heavily relies on narrative, which is a step away from its predecessors to say the least. Sigurgeirsson spoke about this change, saying: "at Image and Form we typically concentrate on the core gameplay of things, that's always where we start. When we nail that down, we embellish it with story and graphics. This time around we actually wanted to make this truly epic adventure about what it takes to be a hero."
SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech will land on the Switch next month, being an exclusive for the foreseeable future, and for more information on the much awaited new game, be sure to check out our preview and the full interview below.
