At Sony's first State of Play event last night we got to see a new trailer for Mortal Kombat 11, showing some unusual and confusing time-bending realities, and to bring everything into perspective, Netherrealm Studios has spoken on the PlayStation Blog about how important this story shift is to the characters.

During the trailer we got to see a host of characters face off against themselves, including Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, and Jax Briggs. Dominic Ciancolo - story and VO director at NetherRealm Studios - explained that "throughout the story, these interactions will give the players more insight into the characters: they'll better understand who they are and why they fight".

He also went on to say each character's 'past' version has been created and designed to "honour their roots", the best example being Johnny Cage. His '90s version will reflect the cocky, immature Hollywood star he was, as he wears bright sparkly clothes and purple plastic shades, in comparison to his 'present' self where he has controlled his sarcastic wit and replaced it with being a concerned leader and dedicated father. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean he still can't throw a nasty punch when necessary.

Ciancolo also added that "distinguishing the 'past' and 'present' versions of each character was a matter of building on our work in Mortal Kombat X and redefining it". He then went on to say that, "by sharpening the 'present' characterisations, the depictions of each version of the characters is brought more sharply into focus".

The developer added that not every character will fight themselves in Mortal Kombat 11, but at least we'll get to see some. Speaking of characters, Noob Saibot and Kotal Kahn have recently been revealed as well, adding to the already impressive roster.

Which past/present interactions are you hoping to see?

REVIEW. Written by Jonas Mäki

"It's a fine version of the game. Sadly, the controller options the Switch provides aren't great."
