A potential third Half-Life game has become somewhat of a running joke in the games business, as it's something that fans have been wanting for years but looks increasingly unlikely. That's why, when an email circulating around the internet this week allegedly from Valve's own Gabe Newell hinting it'd be coming in the next five years, people paid attention.

This was brought to us courtesy of Valve News Network's Tyler McVicker, but he has bad news: it's a fake. He shared this news on Twitter, saying:

"As of now, two people were confirmed by Gabe that the "5 Years" E-Mail was faked. I'll be removing the section of the video that involves the email, changing the video's title and description, along with removing tweets related to it."

It always seemed a bit unlikely that Newell would tease perhaps the biggest project Valve could do with an email and a winky face, but that didn't stop people from dreaming about finally seeing Half-Life 3 in reality.
