Bungie started the Halo phenomenon, but after Halo: Reach the studio left Microsoft to try its luck with Destiny (together with Activision). Today, we know that Microsoft founded 343 Industries with the intention of that studio handling the franchise moving forward, but it wasn't always the plan. In a recent interview, Halo head honcho Bonnie Ross now reveals that Microsoft originally planned to let a third-party developer take responsibility for the continuation of the series and their first choice was the Borderlands-makers, Gearbox Software.
At one time Gearbox was very familiar with Halo since they made the updated PC version of Halo: Combat Evolved, and with the studio's big success with Borderlands back in 2009, it seemed like a safe choice for Microsoft. In the end, they decided to create 343 Industries which since then has crafted Halo 4, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Halo 5: Guardians and now are working on Halo Infinite. Gearbox, on the other hand, went on with Borderlands 2 back in 2012 and some other titles like Duke Nukem Forever, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Battleborn.
Considering what we know today, do you think Gearbox would have been a good choice for Halo?
