Titanfall 3 isn't in development at Respawn Entertainment

Apex Legends is the Titanfall project they were working on, but it's not the direct sequel we've heard rumours of before.

Considering the quality of Titanfall 2, a lot of people thought that Respawn Entertainment had been quietly working on Titanfall 3, but it seems that isn't the case. What could've been Titanfall 3 has instead turned into Apex Legends, a game that has only just been revealed and launched as a free-to-play battle royale title.

Lead producer Drew McCoy recently spoke in an interview about the game itself during a press event, and here he said:

"There are some people who think there are too many battle royale games or it's a fad, the world thinks we're making Titanfall 3 and we're not - this is what we're making."

"To try and convince a sceptical audience for months with trailers and hands-on articles, we're just like 'let the game speak for itself' - it's the most powerful antidote to potential problems."

"We're doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it's not Titanfall 3. It's the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that - let's just ship the game and let players play."

Even when Apex Legends was rumoured this past weekend, outlets like Kotaku still believed that this would come as well as, not instead of, Titanfall 3. Respawn has made it very clear now though, and we won't be seeing a third mainline Titanfall game... at least for now.
