After the sucessful launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the last episode of the saga launched exclusively on Nintendo Switch on December 7th, it's time to celebrate a very special anniversary for the franchise because today, January 21st, is the twentieth Smash Bros anniversary as it first published in Japan on Nintendo 64 on this date twenty years ago.

Masahiro Sakurai, the series creator, published the following message on Twitter to celebrate this anniversary: "Smash Bros. is 20 years old today! Over these 20 years, I've seen so many people enjoy this series in so many ways - at home, at hangouts, at conventions, even in business offices! Development has always been hard on me, but I'm supremely happy. Thank you so much for playing."

Nintendo also wanted to pitch in and celebrate the anniversary by publishing the following message: "Also on this day: the first "Super Smash Bros." went on sale 20 years ago (on January 21st, 1999). It's thanks to all of your loyal support that we've been able to keep this series going even today. Thank you so much!".

A very important anniversary, supported by a great success achieved by the most recent release, which in addition to being the best-selling game on Amazon in 2018, was also the best-selling game in Europe on a Nintendo console.
