Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

US Charts: Black Ops 4 tops Red Dead Redemption 2

It had a lot more days to do so, of course.

October was a massive month for video games and the latest NPD report underlines this fact. Compared to October last year total revenue was up a whopping 73% and it was largely down to two massive games; Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Interestingly both games instantly became the number one and two best-selling games for the entire 2018 and in the case of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 it did so with only 9 days of reported sales (whereas Black Ops 4 had pretty much the whole month). But while they both did well, it should be noted that they don't top the first month sales of last year's Call of Duty: World War II. It's also notable that Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which launched early in October and as such was included in the September data, managed to cling on to the third spot in its second month and has a "double digit" percentage growth compared to Origins. Super Mario Party also enjoyed a good second month climbing from 8 to 5 to become the third fastest selling game in franchise history.

In terms of the hardware side of things, PlayStation 4 was the top-selling console (units and dollars), likely with a healthy injection of sales thanks to bundles, and it was the best October ever for PS4. Increased sales of Xbox One and SNES Mini and NES Mini meant hardware was up 19% year-on-year.
