Some time ago we told you that Nintendo had filed a lawsuit against two websites which offered emulated versions of their games, LoveROMs and LoveRETRO, and now we know the verdict.

The Kyoto-based company has in fact obtained compensation in excess of $12 million USD, which implies the direct and indirect involvement of the site-owners (a married couple called Jacob and Cristian Mathias) with copyright infringement with consequent commercial damage to the company. It's very likely that the two parties don't have enough money to pay it and there will, therefore, have to be a private agreement between the parties which allow Nintendo to claw back something as the company looks to recover some of the losses caused by the sites throughout the years that they've been operating illegally.

It's also likely that a fine this big will act as a deterrent to many other websites that provide ROMs of products protected by copyright, which we imagine is also very much the point.

What do you think about this decision?
