Blizzard has had a tough time over the past few days after its annual BlizzCon event ended on a sour note when fans reacted badly to the announcement of Diablo Immortal. The awkward reveal somewhat overshadowed a number of other announcements made during the show, among them the news that Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft was getting another expansion, Rastakhan's Rumble (the first new cards for which have also since been revealed).

Now we've got another announcement about the fantasy-themed card battler, with Blizzard going public with a rather impressive milestone. According to the company, Hearthstone has now reached 100 million registered players, confirming once and for all what a monster hit the CCG has been for the studio. What started life as a side-project at the studio has, since its launch in 2014, snowballed into something altogether more substantial.

"Reaching 100 million players is a huge milestone for Hearthstone, but what matters to us even more is the fact that so many people around the world have embraced the spirit of the game," Blizzard president J. Allen Brack said of the news. "Whether at events like BlizzCon and Fireside Gatherings or just in tuning in to watch their favourite streamers, it's been so inspiring to see millions of players and fans coming together, online and in real life, to participate in the Hearthstone community."

To mark this considerable achievement the studio has lined up a special event that starts tomorrow, November 7, and runs through until November 11. It's called the 100 Million Players Celebration event (catchy title, right?!) and those who jump into the game during that time will get a one-time gift of six packs from the previous expansion, The Boomsday Project, as well as get the chance to complete a series of special in-game events that'll rewards players with up to 500 gold to spend on other packs.
