During E3 we caught up with Ori and the Will of the Wisps' executive producer Mark Coates who was on hand after its showing during Microsoft's conference to tell us about the new features coming to the stunning platform sequel.
"You can expect some of the characters, the beloved characters that you saw in the first game, to come back, and we're also introducing many, many more," Coates told us in LA. "In this game, you'll be able to run into other NPCs that will actually give you quests. So while some of the pure Metroidvania style gameplay is still in there, you'll have more agencies to really explore optional paths and every nook and cranny of the world. What we found was that everybody loved the environment so much so we're giving them ways to spend even more time in them."
Coates also outlined the new burrow mechanic that lets players dive into the ground and explore the world in new ways, plus there's a completely overhauled combat system coming too. The studio also wanted to create an "touching story" that has the "same kind of emotional impact" as the first game did.
When asked to sum up the game Coates simply said that it was "bigger, better, the same beauty and emotion that you found in the first game, and new combat mechanics taken the next level."
