Is Death Stranding set in Iceland?

There's a theory doing the rounds and it's oddly convincing.

We're still waiting for more details about Hideo Kojima's upcoming game, Death Stranding. Since its announcement during E3 2016 Kojima Productions has only shared teaser trailers and mysterious screenshots, like this strange picture of moss which was published last week by the Japanese developer.

Death Stranding

Yet, even with the very little information currently available (maybe that's something that's going to change with E3 just around the corner), some fans have managed to come up with a plausible theory about the setting of the game. According to this theory, Death Stranding is going to take place in Iceland. Indeed, there are several factors that point in this direction.

First of all, the trailers use songs by the band Low Roar, a group based in Iceland. According to Glixel Kojima apparently discovered the group during a scouting trip to Reykjavik, Iceland, back when he was still working on a project for Konami. Might that trip have inspired this project?

Then there's the graphics engine used for the game, as there's also a connection to Iceland, even if it is rather tenuous. Decima is the engine created by Guerrilla Games for Horizon: Zero Dawn. The promotional campaign for the engine used an image which was taken at the black sand beach in Reynisfjara, Iceland.

Finally, the recent moss-covered screenshot posted on Twitter by Kojima (and pictured above) is reminiscent of Icelandic volcanic rocks. Indeed, the black beaches we've seen in the trailers for the game are all volcanic in appearance.

It's not completely impossible that this fan theory is correct, especially seeing as how Hideo Kojima has retweeted some of the theories. Perhaps we'll get to see more of the game in a couple of weeks during E3 when Death Stranding is likely to feature as part of Sony's conference.
