France are going to win the World Cup (according to EA)

England won't do well, however.

While the World Cup in Russia is a mere two weeks away, EA thought it would simulate the competition in FIFA 18 and see which teams have the best chance of making it to the final, and over on the official EA Sports website the publisher has shared its predictions.

The first thing that should be noted is that generally speaking, the European teams have the rub of the green. Except for Portugal that is, with the defending European champions defeated by Uruguay in the round of 16. Oh, and in a stunning piece of realistic simulation, England failed in a penalty shootout at the same stage.

It should be noted that no African team managed to get past the group stage: neither Mohamed Salah's Egypt, nor Sadio Mané's Senegal, nor Victor Moses's Nigeria.

Spain, Germany, Belgium, and France contested the semi-finals, the latter two having respectively passed Brazil, perhaps the favourites in this competition, and Argentina's Lionel Messi.

The final victory went to Antoine Griezmann's Les Bleus, the tournament's best player and top scorer along with Real Madrid's Spanish midfielder Isco (both had five goals each). The Golden Glove trophy went to Manchester United's David de Gea, with the title of best young player going to Man City's Brazilian, Gabriel Jesus.

In the final, France dominated Germany during the penalty shoot-out to win its second World Cup in twenty years; a risky prediction on behalf of EA Sports when we know that Germany has never lost a penalty shoot-out in the history of the World Cup!

What do you think of EA Sports' simulated prediction? And before you pour scorn on the suggestion, we should remind you that four years ago the prediction made using FIFA 14 saw Germany crowned champions, and look how that turned out.

REVIEW. Written by Ricardo C. Esteves

"The free update isn't quite as good as a game created from the ground up especially for the World Cup, but it comes very close."
