The Gran Turismo series may not hold the same sway with the general gaming public as it once did, with tough competition coming from several other racing series, such as Asseto Corsa, Forza Motorsport and Project CARS.

However, it's still really popular, and a recent series milestone proves this. Through a press release (caught by USGamer), Sony and Polyphony Digital has announced that the series has reached 80 million sold across the 20 years it's been on the market.

"It's hard to imagine that 80.4 million copies of Gran Turismo have been played during the 20-year history of the franchise. It makes me really happy to think of the immense amount of time that has been poured into playing our games! I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for the community, as well as our close friends and supporters within the automotive industry," states series creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

With the recently released figure, users across the web has determined that the most recent chapter, Gran Turismo Sport, has sold approximately 3.4 million units.
