This week Square Enix invited us to get our hands on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and while we were there we had the opportunity to grab a word or two with level design director Arne Oehme and gameplay director Vincent Monnier.

During our conversation, we touched on the setting of the third game in the origins trilogy, the jungle that players will be explored, and the darker themes being examined in the game. Naturally, though, we talked about Lara Croft and what players can expect to see from her this time around.

She's "definitely the most capable Lara yet," Arne Oehme told us at the reveal event. "She has reached the pinnacle of her craft, she has mastered the art of tomb raiding, and she's [going to] reach her defining moment which will make her the tomb raider she's meant to be."

"Lara is actually experiencing fear quite a lot. 'Fear' is the core word for us, the core idea," added Vincent Monnier, "but she is also instilling fear. So it's really a dance between a Lara [who's] very capable and very in control, instilling fear in the enemy, but it's also a Lara that has to face her own fears [with the] tombs."

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is heading to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 14.

REVIEW. Written by Sam Bishop

"It retreads much of the same ground while offering minor tweaks to the existing formula."
