The Grand Theft Auto series stands as one of the most successful brands in the video game industry, but there was a time when the whole concept was in danger of being thrown in the bin.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Gary Penn who worked on the original game at DMA Design reveals that there were two reasons that could have forced the cancellation of Grand Theft Auto.

"Two critical things. One of them is stability, which is a really boring one but it crashed all the fucking time. So even if you did get something in the game, you couldn't really test it."

"Now the other thing that was a problem was the handling - the car handling was appalling...the core of playing was fundamentally broken."

DMA Design stuck with it and polished the game, and the rest is video game history.
