File this one under "weird and unlikely", but ESPN reports that Microsoft seems to be working on reviving the series just in time for the silver anniversary later this year. EA did try to reboot the series back in 2010 and still hold all the rights to it, but they haven't used the brand for seven years since NBA Jam: On Fire Edition was launched.
Despite this, ESPN writes that Tim Kitzrow (the original voice of most old EA Sports games) is working "with Microsoft to possibly get the game resurrected for the 25th anniversary."
Kitzrow himself adds:
"I can't speak anything to the specifics, but I can tell you there is movement in the works to get it done for the 25th year. So I'm hoping that we get a remake that does justice to the original."
If this is true, the game should be announced sooner rather than later considering it is supposed to be released this year if it wants to hit the 25th anniversary.
If it's just being talked about at this late stage it seems unlikely and the rights situation, given that they lie with EA also needs to be considered.
