Over the years we've learned that we shouldn't always put anything into a renewed trademark applications as it is standard procedure for companies to safeguard their brands. Still, it is interesting that Nintendo filed a trademark registration for 1080° TenEighty on December 18 last year.

The 1080° franchise has been in cold storage for the last 15 years, and was saw the light of day on Nintendo 64 in 1998. This game was subsequently released on Virtual Console for Wii. Its sequel 1080° Avalanche for Gamecube wasn't met with the same reception when released in 2003.

With the rumours of an upcoming Nintendo Direct this week one has to wonder whether Nintendo has plans to resurrect their snowboarding franchise. Of course, Ubisoft still plans to bring Steep out on Switch this year, so it won't be without competition.

There was a time when every hardware manufacturer had their own snowboarding title (Microsoft - Amped, Sony - Cool Boarders) and EA had SSX, but lately, there hasn't been much apart from Steep. Let's see if Nintendo decides to bring back 1080°.
