Destiny 2 was no doubt a popular game when it released last month (why not check out our review?), and now NPD Group's Mat Piscatella has revealed some sales numbers that show just how well Destiny 2 did in the US in September.

It was in actually the highest-selling game of the month, followed closely by games like NBA 2K18 and Madden NFL 18, although Destiny 2's sales don't include digital downloads - all the more impressive, then, that it's on the top spot. In fact, it's even the highest-selling game of the year so far.

In terms of hardware across the pond, the Switch sold more units than the PS4, but the PS4 made more revenue, although the SNES Classic Mini sold more units than both of them. Year on year we also now know that the global market has risen 39% in spending, 34% in relation to hardware and 52% for software.

Below is the top 10 highest-selling games in the US in full (across all platforms), with those marked with an asterisk only counting physical sales. Did you expect Destiny 2 to be this popular?

1. Destiny 2* / Activision
2. NBA 2K18 / 2K
3. Madden NFL 18 / EA Sports
4. FIFA 18 / EA Sports
5. Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle* / Nintendo
6. Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite / Capcom
7. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
8. NHL 18 / EA Sports
9. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* / Nintendo
10. Rainbow Six Siege / Ubisoft
