Combat in Bannerlord "is ramped up a lot"

Armağan Yavuz and his team are focused on making it fluid and immersive.

Armağan Yavuz was in LA last month to show off Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, the much-anticipated historical combat-focused RPG that's heading to PC, PS4 and Xbox One, hopefully later this year.

After our time with Bannerlord (which you can read about here) we were able to talk to Yavuz about the game, the development process, as well as what they were showing at E3. It'll come as no surprise to hear that combat was front and centre for Tale Worlds while they were demoing the game.

"Combat is ramped up a lot," Yavuz said, "and we tried to make it like all the combat [is] very fluid and with very good animations, and very high immersion. We tried to make it such that combat flows better, so, for example, the game takes into account exactly what kind of stance you are in, for example, if you're left foot forward, or right foot forwards. According to that, you get like little touches into the gameplay that maybe you don't notice at first, but as you go in deeper and deeper again, you will be able to gain an edge and control combat better."

"We also have directional shield blocking," he continued, "which means that [...] with a shield, you can still decide to block left, right, up or down. If you don't do it exactly right, blocking, you can still stop the attack, but if you do the right one you get extra bonuses. So, for example, your shield will last longer and will not break so easily. So a lot of little touches here and there to make the combat more fluid and more immersive."

That's all well and good, but fans are desperate to get their hands on the game, and many people are eager to know when it's coming. While not confirming a release date, Yavuz did confirm that the wait shouldn't be too much longer.

"It has been going quite well," the man from Tale Worlds told us. "It has been taking a lot of time, because we are so, maybe, in a sense, obsessed with the details and getting it right. But I think we are just getting there, and hopefully, we will put some of the final touches and be able to finish the game sometime this year."
