Super Mario Odyssey hat captures creatures, not possesses

Since we've begun to learn more about upcoming Switch game Super Mario Odyssey, we've learned that Mario can use his hat to "possess" others in the game, such as creatures or people (you can read more in our preview), but we shouldn't actually use the word "possess", as we now know that's not quite correct.
Twitter user Sam Logan recently posted a tweet in which he clarifies the distinction between a Kirby that's swallowed Mario, and one that has been "possessed" by Mario, and the Nintendo of America Twitter were quick to respond by saying: "Um, actually he's been "Captured" by Mario."
Well, that's cleared that up then. Is the difference important?
