Among the slew of announcements that came out of E3 this week was the news that Xcom 2 is getting expanded with War of the Chosen.

This new expansion is a significant one, too, as it adds three new factions to the mix, with fellow renegade organisations fighting Advent, characterful "chosen" alien commanders out to kill you in a series of encounters woven into the campaign, and the zombie-like creatures that inhabit long-abandoned cities.

In fact, the amount of game-changing content coming to Xcom 2 in August meant that the developers considered them to be the potential foundations for Xcom 3.

"We definitely talked about that," Firaxis's Jake Solomon told Polygon when asked about it.

"We have a lot of features that could have been the basis for a sequel, but for us a sequel also requires an entirely new narrative. [...] We're very systems-oriented and so, for us, this is an opportunity to make a new experience, a new game. But we're not going to totally replace the narrative."

Xcom 2: War of the Chosen is heading to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on August 29.

"The story mission is fleeting but decent, and the new soldier class will change the dynamic of any mission."
