After getting to grips with Raiders of the Broken Planet at Mercury Steam's offices for our hands-on impressions, we sat down with the game's creators to learn more about their brand new concept.

When we described the game as "a mission-driven, strong narrative-driven 4v1 action game", produced Dave Cox said: "That's pretty perfect". "It's just an adventure," game director Enric Álvarez added. "It's the main word [I'd use] to describe it, and then all of that. It's a 4v1 sci-fi adventure. If you want to use a word that people may have heard from the past, if you remember Perfect Dark from Rare, in 2000, they had the counter-operative mode, which was precisely what we're doing, but instead of 4v1 it was 1 versus 1. So yeah, it's a counter-operative sci-fi adventure."

"In this game, if you want anything from your enemies, you need to go and get it with your own hands," elaborated the director and studio co-owner. "Yeah it is a shooter, you can shoot enemies from afar, but you're going to lose what they have. If you want what they have (ammo, energy, whatever), you need to figure out how you're going to get there. And while doing so, you put in practice all these other strategies: the cover system, the stress system, and the melee system. So I think this is what drives you to play. The game mechanics you experience are tools to accomplish something very simple, which is: Bam! I want your stuff. So I think this is at the seed of the gameplay."

Raiders of the Broken Planet enters final beta this upcoming weekend (you can sign up now) on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and will release in four full campaigns for these platforms throughout the second half of 2017. Does this concept sound unique and entertaining?
