We were joined by Deck 13 head of game design, Adam Hetenyi, to learn more about the upcoming action-RPG The Surge.

"The Surge is a new hardcore action-RPG, focused on tactical melee combat," says Hetenyi. "The big thing that sets us apart is that you can chop of body parts of your enemies. Target specific body parts, damage them, chop 'em off, take their equipment and make it for yourself. Make it yours."

"It's kind of a dystopian setting," says Hetenyi of the sci-fi scenario. "A real gritty, a real industrial kind of sci-fi. So it's not like far, far future or anything. It's kind of grounded in this way."

Hetenyi also discussed the slight punishment for dying in the game, as you die you drop your accumulated tech, and you'll have to make sure you don't die again and hurry in order to pick it up again.

"When you respawn in your hub, in your op center, you'll see a timer," explains Hetenyi. "You'll see a timer, you'll see the amount of tech scrap that was dropped on the ground in a HUD element and it'll have a timer on it. When you leave your safe area the timer will start ticking down. When that timer reaches zero your tech scrap will begin to decay. So you have a little bit of a race to get your stuff back. You can't just leave out there forever. But as you kill enemies it will add time to the timer."

While The Surge offers the same sort of challenging gameplay as say the Souls games or Deck 13's most recent effort Lords of the Fallen, there won't be a co-op mode, at least not at launch in May:

"That's something that we'd really like to do, but right now it's a singleplayer game," says Hetenyi. "We don't have online capability as of yet, but we all know that stuff is really, really cool and it's something that we'd really like to include in the future. But it won't be there on day one certainly, we'll see if we can maybe do that later."

The Surge is due out for release in May this year on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

We've got a fresh (and lengthy) gameplay walkthrough voiced by Hetenyi as well as the Bad Day at the Office trailer mentioned in the interview below:

REVIEW. Written by Kieran Harris

"It delivers a ton of new weapons and implants, some memorable boss fights, and even works to smooth out the late game grind."
