When we saw the first gameplay from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild back in 2014 many speculated that we'd might get to play as a female Link. Now the producer of the Zelda series, Eiji Aonuma, has revealed why they decided not to let us do that.

In an interview with Kotaku's Stephen Totilo, Aonuma had this to say:

"You know there's the idea of the Triforce in the Zelda games we make. The Triforce is made up of Princess Zelda, Ganon and Link. Princess Zelda is obviously female. If we made Link a female we thought that would mess with the balance of the Triforce. That's why we decided not to do it."

Some of you might ask "then why not let us play as Zelda?". Gamespot's Peter Brown had the very same question, to which Aonuma replied:

"...if we have princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?"

So it turns out that we might get to play as a female protagonist in the future. All Nintendo has to do is figure out how to balance out the Triforce, while also giving Link something to do. Maybe we'll see a Prince Zelda or even have Link being captured by Ganondorf in the future?
