It's not uncommon for a vocal minority to put forth questions about a game's readiness to face a full release in the age of Early Access development, but for a majority of players to collectively say "hold your horses" does not bode well. Planetary Annihilation is set to become a full release on Steam tomorrow, but Early Access players seem to agree that there are still a number of creases to be ironed out.

The most vocal of the players' concerns is the lack of a single player mode. Although the game is set to feature a single player mode, it currently requires you to be connected to the game's server á la 2013's SimCity. This brings us directly to their next concern, which is that the servers are reportedly unstable, resulting in game-breaking frustrations as the game freezes while trying to reconnect with the server. If the game is experiencing server issues now, we can't imagine them getting any better when potential players who've been waiting for release come flooding in to join the game. Players have also noted that the game appears to be poorly optimised, but that is something that might be dealt with in the full release version coming tomorrow.

The game is beautiful to look at and represents a form of strategic gameplay hitherto unseen. It would be a crying shame if it goes down in history as an project that never lived up to its potential.

REVIEW. Written by Mike Holmes

"It's a very good work-in-progress, but perhaps it's not quite finished just yet."
