Sega never forgets Sonic. The blue hedgehog even gets a new look this year, as Sonic Boom has been announced as another third-party exclusive for Nintendo, along with a new animated TV series, and plenty of licensed toys.
The game, which is set to launch on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, will act as a prequel to the stories told in the accompanying television series, and is based on a completely new gaming experience and provides co-op gameplay for up to four players. What that new gaming experience is, Sega are keeping to themselves for now.
Developed by two studios in collaboration with Sonic Team (Big Red Button Entertainment on Wii U and Sanzaru Games on 3DS), we're promised that the game will utilise Nintendo's unique hardware, combining it with Sonic-specific features such as a high game speed. The game also relies on exploration, combat and new ener-beam gameplay, which allows us to experience the world of Sonic Boom in a completely new way. The release is scheduled for sometime in 2014.
The accompanying TV show will be made by Sega of America and Ouido, with the premiere airing on the Cartoon Network. The 52 episodes will each last 11 minutes, and cover a variety of Sonic-themed storylines.
Sonic Boom will be accompanied by a licensing and merchandising drive (with toys being made by Tomy). The toys will make use of the features and powers of the characters in the series. There'll be plushies, action figures, and remote controlled vehicles. Expect more including books, clothing, magazines, and accessories in one of the biggest marketing deals in years.
Here's the first screenshots, some art work, and pictures from the television series. We'll add in the English trailer as soon as we have it, or you can head to Gamereactor Germany and see it there.
As promised, here's some trailers.
